How to Clean and Maintain Retractable Phantom Screens

Published On: July 22, 2016|Categories: Phantom Screens, Retractable Screens|

Unlike traditional fixed screens that are always visible, retractable screens retract into a discreet housing and remain out of sight until you need them. They are an attractive and practical solution for preserving your views as well as your home’s décor. The great thing about these screens is that retractable phantom screens let you enjoy your view all year round because the screen’s mesh allows you to see through the screen, but keeps the bugs out.

Selection

There are several types of retractable screens available for windows, doors, and large openings. They all consist of the same four components – aluminum housings, slidebar, track and PVC coated fiberglass or polyester mesh, which makes them all extremely durable. Phantom screens are so durable and long lasting that they carry an industry leading Limited Lifetime Warranty to give you complete peace of mind. If they’re well looked after and serviced regularly, the screens will last many years because when retracted and not in use, they stay in their housings during wet and cold months.

Mesh

There are over 30 types of mesh available in different colours and weaves. The various mesh types available come with different screen densities and colours, thus allowing for solar shading or privacy. They are the perfect protection from the heat and glare of the sun or suitable for homes with pets or even for full privacy.

Maintenance

Because the screens are not exposed to the wet and cold months, which can cause deterioration on traditional screes, retractable phantom screes require minimal maintenance. It is recommended that you should clean the screens once or twice a season with a mild detergent and water to eliminate any small dust particles in the mesh.  Once they have been cleaned, you can gently wipe them off. The best time to clean your phantom screens is early spring and again in autumn when the summer season is over.

You should also remove any debris that might accumulate on the bottom of the door with a broom or a vacuum. Make sure that the debris is removed properly so that it is not pulled back into the track. Wipe the track with a soft cloth using any household cleaner, but avoid using aerosol cleaners. Wipe off the top and bottom of the track and also the sidebar. Next, use a silicone-based spray lubricant to lubricate both the top and bottom of the track so that the screen slides easily back and forth.  This process should be done on a monthly basis to provide you with years of flawless operation.

Although retractable phantom screens are very durable, accidents do occasionally happen. Whether your pet bumps into them or a tear somehow occurs, the mesh can be replaced. Most of the parts can be repaired or replaced and your local dealer will make sure the screen is up and running again very quickly.
