The weather is warming up and the days are starting to get longer. If you’re going to be out in the sun on your patio or deck, especially when it’s hot outside, you should try and stay safe from the sun. Down by the beach you’ll slather on SPF for on-the-go protection. But at home, there’s an easier choice.

Retractable Awning

When it’s finally time to sit back and relax out back on a nice weekend, nobody wants to worry about applying sunscreen all the time. This is where owning an awning comes in handy. An awning or retractable awning is the perfect answer. With proper positioning or the press of a button you can have sun or shade, depending on the weather and the activities going on around you. Great for relief from the sun and perfect for those wanting to avoid sunburns.

Avoid Sunburns with Awnings

If you want to sit outside in the heat of the day and have a cold beverage or just sit outside to watch the kids, and you don’t want to get sunburnt, your awning gives you that nice cover of shade. You’ll still feel the warm air, but you won’t have to worry about those harmful rays.

Doctors advise that you should wear sunscreen whenever you plan on being exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period of time. Those penetrating UVA and UVB rays can have a serious impact on your skin with a painful sunburn being the most common problem. It can also lead to less time out enjoying your backyard with friends and loved ones.

Awnings not only extend your living space but enrich the way you experience the outdoors. And with warmer weather not going anywhere for a while, awnings are the perfect product for you and your safety and enjoyment. Shade is the original, all-natural, mother nature approved sunburn preventative.

Spring is in the air! And summer isn’t far away!! Those lazy hazy days that all Canadians wish for all winter long are nearly here. With spring and summer come family get-togethers. Backyard barbeques, pool parties and eating dinner on the patio are just a few of the things we like to do in the spring and summer sun. All of these activities are made that much better when you have a home that is equipped with shade-making accessories such as awnings and patio or deck umbrellas.

Patio Awning vs Unbrella

But how do you decide which of these is best for your home? Umbrellas and awnings are suited to different situations. It depends on your needs and the design of your home and yard. Let’s take a look at the differences.

What Works Better For Patios?

Some homeowners may have a modest sized yard. Part of the yard could be landscaped to include a patio that is away from the home. Sometimes this patio area might have an open gazebo or just simply be decorated with some accent potted plants and include outdoor furniture with a seating area. In this situation, a patio umbrella would be a great solution to providing much needed shade. Not only does the umbrella provide shade, but it also helps to protect you and your family from the damaging rays of the sun. There is a wide selection of styles, colours and sizes to choose from.

How About Around the Pool?

Around the pool is another place where the patio umbrella would be best suited. If you use a smaller umbrella you can move it around and place it just where you need it. Larger umbrellas can be placed over tables with seating to provide shade to a group of people at the same time. If the umbrella isn’t required, it is easily cranked closed and secured, protecting it from wind.

What about My Deck?

If you have a large deck, some areas might have greater sun exposure than others. This is when the use of a deck umbrella is most effective. The deck umbrella can provide shade to areas that are not protected by an awning. It can also be adjusted and angled so that no matter what position the sun is at, you can provide shade to that area of the deck. Often a deck umbrella is used around a seating area such as a table with chairs. This offers the perfect setting for a summer evening family meal.

Where are the optimal spots for setting up an awning?

Awnings work best when used for decks and patios that are directly adjacent to your home. The awning is installed on the side of your home, covering your deck and provides optimum shade from the hot summer sun as well as protection from sudden rain showers. Awnings are available in a wide selection of styles, colours and sizes, just like patio and deck umbrellas. While awnings can be more expensive, they are a more permanent solution to providing shade to you and your family. An awning not only provides protection from the sun, it also provides curb appeal to your home. We recommend purchasing a retractable awning for your home. This gives you the convenience of being able to retract the awning when you don’t need it including during the winter. One advantage of awnings over patio umbrellas is that awnings not only provide protection from the sun outdoors but they also shade your home from the damaging rays of the sun.

As you can see, both umbrellas and awnings are a great addition to your home. Both provide protection from the sun and both enhance your enjoyment of your home and yard. Each has their own purpose and when used together can provide you and your family with optimum protection from the hot summer sun.

Choosing an awning can be a daunting task. With so many manufacturers how can a homeowner know which product is best for their home? And which product is manufactured to resist fading? After all, once you’ve selected that perfect design and colour that will complement your home and yard it’s important that it keeps looking great, year after year. In our experience, we recommend the Sunbrella brand to our customers. Sunbrella fabric provides a wide range of colours and styles, and the fabric will withstand fading, year after year.

Awning Retractable

How does Sunbrella keep their fabric colours looking great while resisting fading? Sunbrella fabrics are manufactured using acrylic yarn that is 100% solution-dyed. The manufacturing process of solution-dying is to add colour to the acrylic fibers while they are still in a liquid state. This means that each individual fibre is dyed the brilliant colour that you see. When each fibre is dyed it locks the colour into the fabric giving the fabric a longer life as well as being easy to clean. Other fabric manufacturers simply dyed the surface of the fabric only. With this approach, the heat of the sun, wet rain and snow and drying winds can fade the colour in the fabric over time. With Sunbrella fabrics, the damage normally caused by severe weather is minimized, meaning homeowners can enjoy their Sunbrella awing for many years without the fear of fading fabric colours.

Sunbrella fabric is the most suitable choice for any awning. Sunbrella will withstand many years of severe, harsh climates such as heavy rains, wind, ice, snow and the hot sun, due to the high resistant quality of the acrylic yarns.

In addition to Sunbrella fabric’s ability to resist fading, it also is very resistant to multiple stains, including; grape juice, blood, bird droppings, mildew, grease and more. The mildew resistant property of Sunbrella awnings is due to the woven fabric which allows moisture to escape. This will also resist mildew buildup on your deck or patio. Sunbrella fabrics come with 5 Year Warranty.

Reduce Skin Cancer Risk with Sunbrella Awnings

Another great reason to choose Sunbrella awnings is that they provide up to 98% UV protection. This means that you and your family will be protected from harmful effects of the sun when using your Sunbrella awning. Did you know that Sunbrella fabrics have been recognized by the by The Skin Cancer Foundation, which is an international organization that is dedicated to the prevention of skin cancer. This organization has awarded Sunbrella fabrics the “Seal of Recommendation”. Keep in mind when choosing your Sunbrella awning colour that whites and lighter coloured fabrics will provide somewhat less protection than the darker coloured fabrics. The protective factor of Sunbrella fabric is inherent to the product. It will not be reduced overtime through usage or exposure to the sun.

So as you can see, if you want an awning that will retain its bright colour throughout the years, Sunbrella fabric is the best choice you can make.

If you are interested in an awning for the Ottawa area, contact Jans Awnings and Rollshutters today! From fabric awnings to aluminum awnings, we can install an awning to match your needs and style.

Not too far into the future, the signs of Spring will be upon us once more with warmer days, longer hours of daylight and buds breaking through the ground to delight us with a multitude of floral scents. The beginnings of spring gives us many reasons to be joyous, but with all of the enthusiasm we experience for the warm days of spring and hot days of summer to follow come the pesky bugs to annoy us. As we get our homes and properties ready for outdoor living, so too do the bugs and birds get ready for nesting. Unfortunately, many homeowners discover that one of the prime locations that they love to invade is under your beautiful awning.

Wasp

Here are some tips on how you can prevent these little critters from making their home beneath your awning so that your time outside is enjoyable without an invasions of pests.

Wasps, Hornets and Yellow Jackets

Many people try to get rid of these stinging pests to no avail and they can be tricky preventing them from nesting under an awning, your yard or around your home. The best approach is to start a treatment program once the nest appears so that small problems don’t turn into bigger ones. The first step in eliminating the bugs is to inspect your home, property and awning regularly for active nests. The 5 most common locations for nesting occur:

  • Under roof awnings, retractable or stationary awnings
  • Behind window shutters
  • Hanging from tree branches
  • Inside fence posts and play sets
  • Inside hollow out tree trunks or stacked wood

Yellow jacket nests are particularly hard to find because they are well hidden, so you have to be a bit like a detective to spot them and track them down. They like to nest in the shade or in shaded areas, so check areas under trees or awnings.

Treating a wasp or hornet nest is not that difficult if you do it smartly and take precautions. If you are stung while attempting to get rid of them and experience severe symptoms, get medical attention ASAP!

You can use any good commercial product, like Raid Wasp & Hornet Killer for outdoor nests. After you have thoroughly saturated the nest, you can remove it after 24 hours. Treat the nest at dusk or dawn when flying insects are less likely to be active and remember to wear gloves and long sleeve clothing. Do not spray directly underneath the nest, but rather farther away and always spray with the wind.

The Buzzing Bee

Unlike wasps, hornets and yellow jackets, bees are typically pudgy, hairy and much more docile.  They are important pollinators and for the most part can be left alone, unless of course, they’ve decided to set up house under your awning. If you do discover a colony of bees have made a permanent residence beneath your awning, it is best to call a beekeeper to remove them safely and properly.

Birds

Birds can also be unwelcomed guest under patio awnings and these furry little creatures can be frustrating to relocate, but relocating they must. There are a variety of methods you can use to detract birds from nesting under your awning, like using bird netting. It will keep the birds away and in the event they do come to close to it, they will not become trapped in it. Another method is to destroy the nest before birds lay their eggs. If they have already laid eggs, wait until the offspring have taken flight then destroy the nest so it cannot be reused again next season. Lastly, create a sense of danger by spending time near your patio awning and creating noise and movement.

When you want to enjoy time on your patio during the warm summer months, an awning can provide maximum protection from the heat of the scorching sun.  Adding an awning to your exterior space is a very inexpensive way to extend your outdoor living area.

Although, most patio awnings are designed mainly for sun protection, some are designed to protect against rain and higher levels of wind. Your will no longer be chased indoors by wind gusts, rain showers or even downpours.

Awnings offer both protection and beauty to any patio while helping to reduce energy costs. They can add charm and personality to your home and transform a plain façade into something special. Awnings can increase the value of your home because they set your home apart from the rest.

In additional to their attractiveness, awnings keep your home much cooler during the heat of the summer months. They help reduce air conditioning costs by decreasing the amount of heat that infiltrates the inside of your home by as much as 77%. They protect the interior furnishings from bleaching out by the sun’s rays and reduce sunlight glare through your windows by as much as 94%.

In this article, we are going to take a look at the different main features between fixed and retractable awnings. The first distinction between the two is their style and functionality.

Fixed Awning:

A Jans fixed aluminum awningFixed awnings can protect against all kinds of weather because they are attached to your home using a frame, screws, and other materials to bolt the awning to the building or structure. They cannot be taken down unless you do so permanently.

Fixed awnings require little maintenance and provide constant, uninterrupted shade. On the other hand, because they are stationary, and sunlight is not with the various seasons, you may not get enough sunlight into the house during the cold winter months.

Fixed awnings can also be configured to form a kind of outdoor room over your deck or porch. They can provide a dry, cool place where you sit comfortable away from the elements. However, fixed awnings are typically used for smaller areas such as windows, doors, alcoves, entry ways and walkways.

Because of their permanent structure and installation, you might see them on offices or entry ways. You might also see these types of awnings with graphic designs or company logos on them. Canopy awnings are a form of fixed awnings that cover larger surfaces and require posts and structural supports.

Retractable Awning:

A retractable awning offers the benefits of leaving your patio free and clear of poles and gives a homeowner the option of full sun, part sun or full shade. Since the metals arms are adjustable, you can change the pitch of the awning to your desired position to maximize your protection.a jans retractable awning

Retractable awnings are ideal for rooms that generate excessive heat due to extreme temperatures of the sun. However, you can easily control the amount of light entering into your home and opt for maximizing brightness on overcast days.  They provide excellent coverage during a light shower because the standard awning fabric is highly water-repellent.

Patio awnings are available using a hand crank manual operation, but for those people who want the ultimate ease of operation, retractable awnings also come with a motorized system. A motorized system offers the convenience of positioning by operating a wall switch or remote control.  It couldn’t be simpler.

Your Choice:

Whether you decide on a fixed or retractable awning, there are many styles and colours to choose among to fit any outdoor décor. If you want to make a statement with an attractive and versatile awning, Jans Awnings has over 15 years’ experience in providing customers with quality and service. Awnings are becoming increasingly popular, as they provide a great way to make more out of your outdoor space. Because the sunniest spots of your home are usually found on the southern exterior wall, awnings are very often placed over southern windows or doorways. Rather than simply using your awning to create a shaded area, protected from Mother Nature, people have discovered that these awnings present an opportunity to create power, through the installation of solar panels.

Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the sun that can be harnessed through the utilization of solar panels. This type of energy is highly appealing as a source of electricity, because it is so accessible. Either flat or south facing slopes are ideal for solar panel installation. You can install solar panels at home or up at a family cottage on southern facing awnings, and use them as a backup energy source in times of other power failures. The average residential solar electric system will be able to back up power to your fridge and deep freeze along with a couple of lights if you can allocate the energy efficiently.

commercial awningAny person or business can install a solar electric system on their awnings. Most solar panels have a 25 year lifespan to create energy for your home. The cost up front will be paid for depending on how many panels you are able to install on your property. Ideally, 200 square feet can provide an optimal rate of return. This likely requires solar panels on awnings and on the southern facing portion of your rooftop as well.

You can attach solar panels to your awning or rooftop using a variety of methods, but one of the most common is with the use of Fast-Rack systems. This system is perfect for fixed aluminum awnings or commercial awnings. These mounting systems secure modules to the roof with low profile brackets covered with anodized trim pieces. They have self-sealing attachments that keep panels secure and watertight.

Another option for residents of Ontario is participating in MicroFIT. This program allows residents to receive payments for solar electricity generated on their property to be delivered to the utility. The Ontario Power Authority will pay the home owner per kilowatt/hour for roof mounted system. You can apply for a MicroFIT contract online via the Ontario Power Authority’s MicroFIT site and includes things like electric and building permits as well as permission to connect from your utility.

When you installed your awning, you created a space that provides comfort and shelter from the elements. You’ve also created a whole lot of shade. To further beautify your outdoor space, you may want to do a little planting. Low maintenance perennials are the way to go and finding the right mix a foliage will have your comfy space with loads of wonderful plants to look at.

Awning plants

Many properties have a shaded area that will restrict the homeowner in their selection of plants. Awnings are no different. While more sun exposed areas will allow you to plant almost anything, planting under the shade of an awning will require a little more consideration.

Container plants

Vines such as Jacob’s ladder and English ivy will make great fillers for your pots. Excellent grasses that will centre any pot and will tolerate low levels of sunshine might include spider plants. There are many varieties of Hostas available at your local nursery that will fill your awning space nicely. To add colour, consider a lily. The flax, peace and bush lilies will all tolerate shade well and are low maintenance in general. You could also experiment with your favourite plant despite what the experts say. Keep in mind that if your favourite plant fails to bloom or starts growing smaller leaves, you may have to move it to a sunnier location.

Perennial gardens

Looking for a garden that you won’t have to plant each year? Hope you like the colour green. Many of the plants that will appreciate your awning shade are foliage greens. Ferns in many varieties will work well and spread year after year. They require little direct sunlight and less water than many other plants. Like the fern, many other house plants will do well under your awning but need to be brought in for the winter. Generally before the first frost. Lily of the valley is one plant that will thrive in the shade and provide a little colour. Beware as it is an aggressive grower and you could find yourself drowning in it. Another way to add colour if you find your new shade friendly garden is too green for your tastes is in other elements. Colourful pots and seating under your awning will complement any garden, no matter how monotone.

Installing an awning to solve the problem of too much sun and too much heat, doesn’t have to mean you’ve created another problem. With a plan and even a small budget, plants can and will thrive under awnings and indeed, many shady areas.
